Ulsan is a coastal city located in the southeastern part of the country.

To the north of Ulsan is Gyeongju, a city known for culture and tourism, and to the south is Busan, Korea’s second largest city. Hyundai Heavy Industry, a world-renowned shipbuilding company, is located in Dong-gu on the coast. Hyundai Motor Company is also located along the Taehwa River in Buk-gu. In addition, there is a large-scale oil and chemical industrial complex opposite Hyundai Motor Company, across the river. Ulsan City was the first industrial city that emerged in Korea, and the hub of the country's economic development.

Buk-gu is one of the five administrative districts of Ulsan City(Ulsan-si). Geographically, it is located on the eastern side of Ulsan, bordering a coastline where mountains and the sea harmoniously meet. Inland, the area along the Dongcheon River has been developed as an extensive hinterland, including new towns and residential areas that combine convenient transportation with a balance between urban and rural living. To the south, three development zones are clearly distinguished by region and function: the Yangjeong, Yeompo, and Hyomoon small and medium-sized enterprise complexes centered on Hyundai Motor Company, and the Gangdong Marine Tourism and Fisheries Complex.
