Ulsan is a coastal city located in the southeastern part of the country.
Above Ulsan is Gyeongju, the city of culture and tourism, and below it is Busan, the second largest city in Korea. Hyundai Heavy Industry, a world-renowned shipbuilding company, is located in the Dong-gu area, which is adjacent to the shore. Hyundai Motor Company is likewise situated along Taehwa River in Buk-gu. In addition, there is a large-scale oil and chemical industrial complex opposite Hyundai Motor Company, across the river. Ulsan City was the first industrial city that emerged in Korea, and the hub of the country's economic development.

The total land area of Buk-gu is 157.27㎢. It is divided into eight administrative units, each of which is called a "dong".
